“How CCTVs and a Fortified Strongroom Couldn’t Prevent a ₹25 Crore Heist at a Jewelry Store”

CCTV cameras were deliberately disabled, and a strong room (locker) was breached as part of an elaborate plan that culminated in a significant theft at Umrao Jewellers in south Delhi’s Jangpura. The robbery, which resulted in the theft of ornaments valued at ₹20-25 crore, took place at Umrao Jewellers in the Bhogal area between Sunday evening and Monday morning.

The thieves gained access to the four-story building via the terrace and ultimately reached the ground floor where the strong room was situated. Subsequently, they meticulously drilled a hole in the strong room’s wall to gain entry to the vault containing the valuable ornaments. In addition to these stolen items, they also made off with the jewelry that was on display in the showroom.

The owner of the showroom, who had securely locked the establishment on Sunday evening, made the distressing discovery of the theft when reopening the showroom on Monday. Typically, the store remained closed on Mondays.

Authorities are currently reviewing any available CCTV footage recorded prior to the thieves disabling the cameras. As of now, no arrests have been made.

A similar incident was reported in Ambala, Haryana, where thieves targeted a cooperative bank and made off with jewelry and other valuable items. They employed a gas cutter to create an opening in the bank’s wall, providing them access to 32 lockers. This theft only came to light on Monday morning, as the bank remained closed over the weekends.
