Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Addresses Tomato Price Concerns, Announces Subsidized Sale
During a parliamentary session, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman discussed the steps taken by the central government to address the escalating prices of tomatoes in the country. She revealed that the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Limited (NCCF) will sell tomatoes at a reduced rate of ₹70 per kilogram in the Delhi-NCR region.
Sitharaman emphasized that the NCCF’s initiative will encompass various areas of Delhi, ensuring widespread accessibility. This distribution model has already been operational in states like Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan since July 14.
In her address, Sitharaman highlighted the government’s commitment to providing essential commodities at affordable prices, acknowledging the crucial role such affordability plays in meeting citizens’ needs. Additionally, she underscored the government’s decision to import tomatoes from Nepal by removing import restrictions. The initial batch of imported tomatoes is anticipated to arrive in Varanasi, Lucknow, and Kanpur by Friday.
During the discussion on a no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman also showcased the accomplishments of the Modi government. She praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and the transformative economic changes brought about under his administration. Sitharaman further addressed the global economic challenges, including high inflation and sluggish growth, that have affected various nations, offering examples such as the struggles faced by the United Kingdom and the European Central Bank.
