Fresh Violence Erupts in Manipur’s Imphal West District, With Two Houses Set Ablaze
In a recent outbreak of violence, at least two houses were set on fire, and gunshots were fired in Imphal West district, Manipur. This incident occurred in New Keithelmanbi in the Patsoi police station area around 10 p.m. on October 4. The assailants fled the scene after the attack, causing tension in the area. Security forces and fire services personnel managed to control the fire. Additional security measures have been taken to maintain control over the situation.
The region has witnessed ongoing ethnic tensions since May 3, with over 180 casualties and hundreds of injuries reported. The clashes began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill districts to protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the Meitei community. The Meiteis make up approximately 53% of Manipur’s population and primarily reside in the Imphal Valley, while Nagas and Kukis, constituting just over 40%, reside in the hill districts.
